DARLINGTON, S.C. (WBTW) — Darlington County’s new courthouse is officially open for business.

Some staff moved in on July 1 and just a day later, proceedings began. Officials say it took just under three years to complete the $15 million project.

“This courthouse is one that I can feel sure to talk to economic developers. They can bring them here, and we can show that Darlington is moving forward,” said Clerk of Court Scott Suggs.

The older courthouse, built in 1965, still sits just a few blocks over. Security issues and a lack of space forced officials into a more modern fit — the upgraded version boasts four court rooms that allows for simultaneous jury trial and family court hearings.

Each room is outfitted with better technology and tighter inmate security along with modern light fixtures, wood finishes and a grand staircase.
