Where lightning has struck most in Ohio so far this summer

CLEVELAND (WJW) — With the remnants of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Beryl rolling through parts of Ohio Wednesday, we wanted to take a look at how storms , and specifically lightning have impacted the state through the summer so far.

The National Lightning Detection Network released a helpful graphic showing where lightning has hit across the state from June 10 to July 9 (of course, the official first day of summer was June 20). In that period, we’ve been struck by lightning more than 37,000 times.

As seen above, the southern most part of the state has been hit a lot.

According to the journal Science , lightning is more likely to occur over land than over the ocean and during the summer than during winter. Hot spots around the world reportedly take place over steeper terrain, where warm and cool air can more easily meet.
