Review: Hannah Berner’s Netflix Comedy Special, We Ride at Dawn

The so-called funny girl, Hannah Berner , left Summer House after Season 3, but now she’s got her own Netflix comedy special. The former semi-pro tennis player burned a few bridges, especially after hooking up with now husband, Des Bishop, in Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula’s master bathroom. Hannah didn’t seem too fussed about how she left the series or that everyone disliked her except for Giggly Squad cohost Paige DeSorbo . Then, Hannah turned her sour lemon of a departure into lemonade and jumped head first into becoming a comedian. So what was her Netflix comedy special We Ride at Dawn like? Keep reading to find out!

The premise of Hannah Berner’s Netflix comedy special

The whole comedy special lasted a total of 50 minutes. The narrator asked, “Gigglers, are you ready?” And I can safely answer, “No, I was not.” As Hannah walked out in a bronze two-piece set, she immediately dropped to the floor to do the worm. If this was the caliber of jokes I was in for I was already worried.

Hannah greeted the Philadelphia crowd by calling them “Hoagie Hoes,” and the crowd seemed to be embracing the new nickname. Early on, I felt like I was missing the punchline. I wasn’t into the constant cursing or explicit sexual nature. And there was a lot of sex talk. Between her “overgrown p*ssy” and “limp d*ck” issues, I was in way over my head and really wanted to zone out.

I was waiting for Hannah to be funny in her own right, not just because she said “f*ck.” The premise of her comedy special revolved around her mental health, older husband, unrealistic sex scenes in movies, and other hot takes about pop culture. She self-described her sense of humor as “female locker room,” which just translated to raunchy.

Hannah started by talking about aging and the fact that she was 32. The former reality star commented on what you’re expected to do to stay young. She explained if you’re not “f*cking your face with a jade roller. Or snorting lines of collagen. If you’re not doing Pilates, which is BDSM. If you’re not putting snail mucin and snail ejaculate all over your face,” then you’re doing it wrong. She then ended the punchline by saying that you start to feel like you will look like Joe Biden if you don’t follow these rules. Meh.

My funny bone was tickled by Hannah

I will admit I did let out a laugh during the segment where she noted that she was “Unkidnappable.” She was commenting on how commercials make women feel unattractive, saying, “Men are never going to find you attractive again. And I’m like, ‘That sounds so peaceful.”

Hannah’s joke about the water conspiracy was pretty cute. She noted that girls “don’t want boyfriends. They want a Stanley Cup.” In this entire segment, I felt personally victimized because I definitely have a basic bitch white Stanley.

Hannah used her Netflix comedy special to ask questions that most women have probably already thought of. Like, what is in a Diet Coke? Why can’t we constantly drink espresso martinis? This was perhaps the funniest bit of her special.

There could have been more originality…

Hannah jumped to the subject of politics. She brought up major topics like abortion and gun laws. The comedian noted, “Some people believe you should never have an abortion under any circumstances, even if you’re bloated.” The room of mostly women didn’t cheer or really laugh. I personally cringed and was starkly reminded that Roe vs. Wade had been overturned. And that isn’t funny.

She then brought up gun laws, noting, “Do you know some people believe guns don’t kill people? People kill people.” I was immediately thrust back to my time of watching Happy Gilmore, where the antagonist had the same sentiment written on his shirt.

Hannah took the trail most traveled of every Lifetime movie and joked that women had a good reason for what they did. It felt like a modern-day Lorena Bobbit punchline.

Hannah Berner’s Netflix comedy special review: The final verdict

Would I choose to watch Hannah again? Probably not. But I can see how some find her funny. She uses her cute voices and embraces the dumb girl theories of girl math. I wish she had taken her comedy from her own life experiences.

Personally, I don’t find crude, sexual humor funny enough for a 50-minute special. And why she talked about “queefing,” “breaking the hymen” and “needle d*cks” for 10 minutes is beyond me.

Many of her jokes were just a mix of what I felt I had already heard. I finished the special not knowing her target audience, but I knew it wasn’t me.
