RNC Chooses Fake Electors to Make Trump Nomination Official

The Republican National Committee has tapped fake electors who falsely attested that Donald Trump won their respective states in the 2020 election to make the former president’s nomination official at the Republican National Convention next week, CNN reported on Wednesday.
Some of the electors are facing criminal charges for their roles in Trump’s scheme.
After losing the election, Trump falsely claimed the contest was rigged and he tried to pressure Republican officials in states he lost to overturn the election results. Part of the scheme involved pro-Trump fake electors who signed official documents in which they claimed to be the rightful electors.
Trump’s efforts ultimately culminated in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, where a mob of his supporters violently tried to overthrow the republic.
The RNC has chosen electors from the following states to be delegates, committee members, or alternates who will cast the votes that will make Trump the Republican nominee at next week’s convention: Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, and Wisconsin.
“Their role underscores how Trump has effectively woven election denialism into the GOP’s platform,” the CNN report stated . “It also marks an about face for a party that, at least in the immediate aftermath of the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, sought to distance itself from Trump and his efforts to stay in power.”
Trump is currently under federal indictment for his attempt to subvert the 2020 election. He also faces charges in Georgia for trying to overthrow the results in that state. However, this month the Supreme Court jeopardized both cases when it ruled that former presidents have “absolute immunity” from “official acts” they perform. The court did not establish a divide between such acts and those considered “unofficial.” In its decision , the majority said that when Trump urged his vice president to refuse to certify the election results as the presiding officer in Congress, the president was acting in his official capacity and enjoys “presumptive immunity” in this instance.
