CLAY CITY, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Parvo and full kennels have temporarily closed the Powell County Animal Shelter.

Officials said on Facebook that the animal shelter can’t take any new surrenders for at least two weeks while they isolate the litter.

The shelter said the public interested in adoption or pet licenses will require appointments.

According to Elanco Animal Health’s ParvoTrack , Kentucky is a hot spot for parvo. Kentucky has had 294 confirmed parvo cases according to the parvo tracker with 110 of those being in Christian County and 12 more in Fayette County.

Parvovirus, or parvo, can infect any dog, but it can be especially dangerous – even fatal – for young or unvaccinated dogs. It’s highly contagious and can spread from dog to dog, or through contaminated feces or surfaces, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA). While humans can spread the virus on their hands or clothing, people are immune to parvo’s effects.

Vaccines are available, and puppies should receive a dose between 14 and 16 weeks old, the AMVA says.
