TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Alabama Department of Transportation plans to resurface, install guardrails and place new traffic striping on a portion of SR-216 in Tuscaloosa County.

The plans will primarily focus on the junction of SR-215 to Lock 17 Road in Brookwood and aim to improve mobility and safety. The 11.6-mile project is expected to begin Monday and will continue until the end of the year, weather permitting.

ALDOT Spokesperson John McWilliams says the project will make a big difference for the community.

“Anytime we can do these enhancements and safety projects by adding guard rails, safety widening resurfacing project and new traffic stripping, its something when the public drives on it they will know that this is a fantastic project,” McWilliams said.

Colleen Pittman says she supports the project and hopes the upgrades will make the roadway safer. She works at the Bama Discount Tobacco store on 216 near Holt.

“This road is horrible. There are potholes, and the road is cracking, and you have to drive in and out of the lanes to keep from busting a tire,” Pittman said. “I think it will be excellent for us once they get it done and it will help the community a lot and make it an easier road.”

Lane closures will not be allowed from 6:30 a.m. through 8:30 a.m. to reduce the impact on traffic. Similarly, closures will not be permitted on weekends when the University of Alabama has a home football game.

Flaggers and a pilot car will guide traffic through portions of the work zone. The project will cost $5.16 million.
