Not one, not two, but three tornadoes touched down in western New York on Wednesday afternoon as the remnants of tropical cyclone Beryl created a string of strong storms that swept through the region.

The three tornadoes occurred within a two-hour span within three different western New York communities - the first touching down just after noon and the third hitting the ground roughly 100 minutes later.

The first two tornadoes occurred roughly 35 minutes apart - the first in Arkwright, Chautauqua County at 12:06 p.m. and the second in Eden, Erie County, at 12:40 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo . The third tornado touched down in Darien, Genesee County, at 1:42 p.m.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with any of the twisters.

The first tornado was the strongest of the trio and was on the ground the longest. The Arkwright tornado was rated as an EF-1, or weak, on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had winds reaching an estimated 110 mph, and traveled three miles, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The twister damaged numerous trees and the roofs of several homes, and blew out the walls of other homes. An entire grove of hardwood trees was either uprooted or snapped off by the winds.

The tornado, with a path width of 150 yards, started in Arkwright, traveled northeast and ended eight minutes later in Hanover, Chautauqua County.

The second tornado, in Eden - rated as an EF-0, or weak, on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had winds reaching an estimated 85 mph, and traveled nearly 1 mile, according to the Weather Service.

The twister damaged many trees in its path, including uprooting trees that then fell onto nearby buildings.

The tornado had a path width of 75 yards and was on the ground for four minutes and traveled northeast within Eden, starting near the intersection of Jennings Road and Kickbush Gulf and ending near Gary Drive and Sauer Road.

Tornadoes in New York: A history of twisters

Since 1950, New York has experienced over 500 tornadoes, with the majority being relatively weak E-F0 and E-F1 twisters. However, the state has also seen a few significant tornado events, including the devastating tornado outbreak of May 31, 1985, which produced several powerful tornadoes, including an E-F4 in Chenango County.

While tornadoes are far less common in New York compared to regions like the Midwest, they remain a notable and occasionally destructive aspect of the state's weather history.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has tracked tornadoes in New York since 1950, providing data on their paths and impact.

This interactive map , featuring tornado data from January 1950, offers detailed information including damage estimates and any injuries or fatalities caused by recent tornadoes.

Wednesday's tornados are not listed on the map as the database does not include any tornados that occurred in 2024.
