Rhode Island has some very special connections to the upcoming Paris Olympics. Jamestown's Emily Kallfelz has made the U.S. Olympic rowing team. Rhode Island sailor Stu McNay is among American athletes headed to Paris. Former Providence College basketball star Jovana Nogic will play for her native Serbia in the Olympics.

And the Journal's Bill Koch sat down with URI women's basketball coach Tammi Reiss to get her thoughts on Team USA's women's 3x3 basketball, for which she is the assistant coach.

“You get to go against the best of every country,” Reiss said on Tuesday morning at the Ryan Center. “As an athlete that was always my goal — to be the very best in the world. You can say that when you play in the Olympics.”

Sure, these women are the reigning champs. And sure, they will be staying outside of Paris with other basketball greats like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart.

But 3x3 is a different game, and Reiss is focused on getting her team up to speed and working on that all-important chemistry.

Of course, Reiss is also pretty excited to watch some of the other athletes while she's in France, like gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky. “This is a very rare opportunity,” Reiss said. “Enjoy the moment. Don’t work it away.”

🍟 This Friday is National French Fry Day. Here's where you can get some for free.

🐴 Three female horses and two babies, one barely a month old now, were somewhere in Oklahoma, abused, starving and headed for a Canadian slaughterhouse, when Stony Creek Farm's Erin Babbitt made the decision to rescue the animals. Here's how they are recovering at the Swansea farm.

🐳 For the second time in less than two weeks, a report of a humpback whale wrapped in fishing lines brought a marine animal rescue team from the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown to waters off Massachusetts.
