Twisters will be whirring into theaters a week from now, and the verdict from early screenings suggests we have much to look forward to.
Lee Isaac Chung's latest is a twist on the 1996 disaster epic Twister , brought into the 21st Century with Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe and Katy O'Brian starring.
"Growing up as a child I was mesmerized when the original film came out in 1996," Chung said. "So, when the producers came to me to direct this new chapter, I was truly honored and terrified to make the transition into tentpole, summer blockbuster territory. But the film embodies what inspired me to take on the challenge; I wanted to run toward my fears and not away from them."
It seems taking that leap has paid off because audiences are loving it so far.
Drew Taylor, Senior Writer at The Wrap, said, " Twisters isn't just the year's best, most satisfying summer movie, it's also one of the best movies of the year (period)."
Taylor isn't alone in this line of thinking. Critic Scott J. Davis echoes his sentiments, saying, " Twisters might just be my favourite film of the summer & one of faves of 2024".
Others are calling it a "fun time" that "looks great" and "oozes energy".
The full reviews are also starting to pour in, and Twisters is currently sitting at a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Manuel São Bento at FandomWire called it "a visual spectacle full of action and adrenaline", and Empire 's Beth Webb teases that the film features "visual flourishes that range from terrifying to outrageously good fun."
Not every review was glowing, however. Deadline 's Damon Wise said "It's hard to imagine who Twisters is actually for" and Owen Gleiberman at Variety says it's "a movie where reality ultimately takes a lot of the wind out of its gales."
Twisters Review Roundup
- Collider: The film packs a stunner of an intro, high stakes, charismatic characters, and memorable set-pieces intended for massive screens, making for a satisfying follow-up to the original.
- Independent (UK): Twisters, thankfully, is a sequel that actually remembers the capable, rational scientist heroes of its Nineties predecessor. It suggests Hollywood might finally come to its senses when privileging brawn over genuine smarts and expertise.
- Digital Spy: Whether or not it lives up to it might depend on your personal connection to – and nostalgia for – the original movie. But Twisters still delivers where it counts with thrilling huge-scale set pieces which are very wet and very windy.
- Daily Telegraph (UK): A film many might have written off as a faintly desperate revival of an ageing blockbuster brand is in fact the most wholehearted, warm-blooded, meticulously crafted good time at the movies since Top Gun: Maverick.
- indieWire: Much like its predecessor, this rousing and surprisingly romantic gust of multiplex fun spins a strange combination of genres into a conventionally satisfying ride.
