Welcome to Thursday. The Southland will get a break from the heat soon as excessive heat warnings for much of the interior areas, valleys and coasts will break by 9 p.m.

There's some cooling at the beaches today with highs as low as 70 degrees for Malibu and mid 70s further south along the coast. Inland coastal areas will see highs in low 80s.

Valley temperatures are still sizzling with highs in the upper 90s up to 107 degrees including the Inland Empire.

Orange County inland areas will range in the 80s, except for the Santa Ana mountains and foothills with highs in the low 90s.

The high desert will see daytime temperatures between 108 to 116 degrees, and between 114 and 117 degrees for the low desert. The deserts will continue to see excessive heat until Friday evening.

Forecasters say we are still not clear from a wildfire risk with this heatwave. The South Coast AQMD has issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory until 5 p.m. due to the Lake and Vista fires.

Come tomorrow, we should expect slight cooling.

      This day in history

On this day in 2002, 7-Eleven began handing out free Slurpees to the public to celebrate their anniversary.

      Things to do

Hey Alexa, play 'Work It' by Missy Elliot:

      • Missy Elliott: The original queen of rap, singer and producer Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott proves she still knows how to work it with her new Out of This World Experience tour. Her two-evening stop at Crytpo.com also features hip-hop royalty Ciara, Timbaland, and Busta Rhymes.
