Delaware has claimed $1.6 billion in Powerball wins, according to a gambling website.
Delaware residents have cashed in $1.6 billion in Powerball lottery winnings since 1992, a national gambling site says.
That $1.6 billion is adjusted for inflation, and GambleSpot says it used data from the Powerball website to figure out how many people had won lotteries between 1992 and 2024.
The site said Delaware winners have won the Match 5 266 times, Match 5 + Power Play 9 times, and the Powerball jackpot 10 times.
Those 10 times, though, generated the most winnings in this state, at $1.1 billion, again accounting for inflation.
The survey doesn’t mention Megamillions, meaning the survey could be lowballing the total number of winners and amount won.
The largest win in Delaware came in 2016 by a resident of Selbyville with a $121.6 million Powerball ticket.
Even so, Delaware ranks No. 22 in a national list of winners, right in the middle.
Indiana ranks at the top with $6.5 billion from 1,271 tickets.
Neighboring state Pennsylvania ranked third with 918 wins and $4,655.32 million in winnings, after inflation. A total of 19 people have won the Powerball jackpot there for a total of $3,029.17 million, with inflation taken into account.
“Analyzing lottery data over a significant period can provide valuable insights into societal and economic dynamics, as well as our fascination with luck and chance,” said Andriy Nezdropa, CEO of Adwise Partners LLC, the company behind GambleSpot, “People often find lottery statistics fascinating because they reflect public interest in gambling and the allure of hitting it big.
“Tracking which states have had the most winners can serve as a barometer of this interest over time. It can also help to identify statistical anomalies.
“While lottery draws are supposed to be random, long-term data can reveal if there are any unexpected trends or biases in the distribution of wins.”
Previous surveys have said Delaware is the fourth most lottery-obsessed state, with an average internet search volume of 21,680 per month per 100,000.
The state lottery has contributed $6 billion to Delaware’s General Fund, which is used for various public services within the state.
Among other things, the survey said:
- The most commonly drawn white Powerball number was 61 which has appeared 92 times, based on draws from October 2015 and April 8, 2024. That time period was chosen because there were different numbers of balls in the drawing before then.
- The most commonly drawn red Powerball number is 18, drawn 51 times during the same period.
- Other common white balls draws were 63 (89 times), 32 (88 times), 21 (87 times) and 23 (85 times).
- The least commonly drawn number on white balls was 13, which has appeared 52 times.
- The least commonly drawn number on red balls is 15, which has been drawn 28 times
Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah were not included in the ranking because they don’t participate in the Powerball lottery. Maine and Montana were not included because data for those states could not be gathers.
