BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — North Dakota’s public water systems have been rated “excellent” in terms of all health-based water standards, according to the latest report from the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality.

Based on the data, 99 percent of public water systems in North Dakota meet federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) standards.

The report notes in 2023, the Department of Environmental Quality issued 203 certificates of compliance to state public water systems. Any violations of the standards are included in the report, and Greg Wavra, administrator of the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality’s Drinking Water Program, points out most violations referred to in the 2023 report have been resolved.

“It is a significant challenge for public water systems and states to meet the ever-increasing number of requirements of the SDWA,” says Wavra.
