Former President Donald Trump took concern with Gov. Doug Burgum's (R-ND) six-week abortion ban in North Dakota, a possible insight into the former president's thinking about the vice presidential candidate.

When asked about Burgum's ban on Fox News Radio , Trump said, "Well, it’s a little bit of an issue. It’s a pretty strong ban."

"I think Doug is great, but he’s taken a very strong stance, or the state has, I don’t know if it’s Doug, but the state has," Trump continued. "It’s an issue."

Burgum is considered one of three vice presidential finalists, along with Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and J.D. Vance (R-OH). The governor signed the law in September 2023 with exceptions for rape and incest up to six weeks and a complete ban thereafter with a caveat for medical emergencies. It was considered one of the harshest bans in the country.

Trump's comments come soon after he adjusted the GOP's platform to abandon a federal abortion ban and leave the matter up to the states. However, Trump's stance on Burgum's abortion ban is interesting, given it is a state, not federal, problem. The Republican platform does state specifically that it opposes late-term abortion, while Burgum's state bans it nearly entirely.

The GOP's new platform on abortion has received criticism from some anti-abortion Republicans, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, who said it was a "profound disappointment to the millions of pro-life Republicans that have always looked to the Republican Party to stand for life."

Trump said in the same interview that he may announce his vice-presidential pick during the Republican National Convention, which begins July 15 and runs until July 18.

"[Vice presidents] used to be picked during the convention, and it made the convention practically more interesting," Trump said. "The pick used to be during the convention. That’s what I’d like to do."
