SWANSEA, Mass. (WWLP) – July is National Ice Cream Month and a time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our nation. To celebrate these two together, three ice cream shops in Massachusetts are offering free ice cream to kids if they can recite the Pledge of Allegiance by memory.

The “ I Pledge Project ” is a nationwide incentive to get kids to show off their skills of memorizing the Pledge of Allegiance. Kids can then be rewarded with some free ice cream! Hundreds of ice cream shops across the country are participating in the project, including three here in Massachusetts:

    • Polar Cave Ice Parlour at 22 Falmouth Road in Mashpee
    • Tapleyville Ice Cream at 141 Pine Street in Danvers
    • Eskimo King at 29 Market Street in Swansea

Eskimo King talked with our NBC Affiliate WJAR about the project, they said they have been a part of it for years.

“Nancy the owner, she saw it at an ice cream shop in Savannah and she loved the idea of bringing patriotism back into early age,” said employee Lauren Morra.

At Eskimo King, they are offering free ice cream to kids 12 and under every Monday night in July from 4 to 7 p.m. After a kid recites the Pledge of Allegiance, they can choose a vanilla or chocolate twist cone with red, white and blue sprinkles.

“It’s fun to see them of all ages especially the young kids because they get nervous when they’re trying to recite it and sometimes they have an older sibling that’s guiding them along. Its so cute,” said Morra. “You can tell they’re happy with themselves, they’re proud and they’re excited to get some free ice cream on top of it.”
