Thanks to the Summer Enrichment Program sponsored by the Powered By People Institute, dozens of young girls from North Minneapolis to get on Bde Maka Ska and go sailing.

One of the goals is to get these girls out of the house.

"Our founder Dr. Verna Price said go get the girls and take them outside," says Dorothy Nins with the Girls Taking Action program. "They've been in the house all year and really developed some different habits."

And, it's a way for them to learn life skills.

"So many of the terms that are a part of sailing, and the teamwork that it takes to really be a good sailing team, really applies to life," Nins says.

And it helps to erase a common stereotype, according to Youth lead mentor Naya Massey.

"Sailing, I feel like is an activity that's usually, honestly, reserved for rich people," Massey said. "But anyone can sail."

"It's amazing to just sail in a boat and relax and get some fresh air," said one of the girls.

Even though there wasn't much wind on the lake Thursday, they learned how to rock the boat and get it going, and spend some time in nature.

"There's a no-phone policy here while we're out on the water, and so just to get to know themselves and others, to be outside, is invigorating," says Nins. "And it's good for you. It's good for your mind, your spirit, your body, so that's what we wanted to do to begin. To heal folks from being indoors."
