The mercury continues to rise across most of the country, but that doesn't mean that some of us aren't looking forward to fall, when the humidity will once again dissipate and we can finally get back to enjoying some time in our garden.

But, in order to have a garden to enjoy this fall there are certain steps we'll need to take right now , especially if we want any of those plants to be edible come harvest time. That means counting out the germination and days until maturity information on the back of the seed packets we've been hoarding all summer.

Of course, if you're anything like me and struggle to make sense of it all, you can always just watch this homesteaders video where she breaks down some of the things you should be planting today so that you can enjoy them before the first frost of the season.

Between dealing with early summer pests, and needing ground temperatures to be at a certain level, @gardeningsimplified says she's waiting until right now to put some of the seeds into the ground (or the container garden), including sugar pumpkins, bush beans, turnips, and more.

A lot of these plants need to be planted a few times a year (like basil and cilantro) either because they get used up quickly, or else because they can bolt during those heat waves. But, other than that, it seems like the OP is mainly looking to plant the items that she and her family will be able to enjoy over the winter once the growing season has ended.

Growing your own food is not just fulfilling because you get to spend so much time tending to and enjoying your garden, but also because you get to know exactly what is going into your body.

Obviously the OP has quite a bit of space to work with, but you can grow an edible garden with as little as a single flowerpot.

If you want to do something smaller than the OP but larger than the single pot approach, you can do what this woman did and create a stunning garden with just two pots and a trellis. Take a look at how she put this smart design together and to find out how many different plants she was actually able to squeeze into this setup (spoiler alert: it was seven different things).

These Are the Plants You Need to Plant Now for a Fall Harvest

For anyone who wants to have a hearty garden once the calendar flips over to September, you'll want to follow the OP's lead and get started today.

Or, maybe over the weekend once temperatures break, that is!
