‘Martin’ prequel Drama series Is Reportedly In The Works — Series Will Revolve Around A ‘Young Martin’

The highly-anticipated Martin cast reunion stole the show at the recent Emmy Awards, creating great memories of the popular 90s sitcom and reigniting interest in the beloved comedy. Fans can now look forward to a new series with Young Martin, an upcoming hour-long drama series.

Martin Lawrence and his production company, RunTelDat will be producing the show while in partnership with Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios, according to @deadline. Young Martin is a modern take on the character of Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the ups and downs of growing up. This new series pays tribute to the original Martin show and explores the challenges of adolescence in a fresh and relatable way, according to the news outlet.

“Out of all the hit shows during the 90’s, there was only one Martin — a show that defined culture and positivity. Martin reflected a real group of friends from our community that wound up on TV screens all over the world,” WonderHill CEO Marvin Peart said. “I respected and revered Martin Lawrence for creating Martin Payne and what he did for African Americans on television in front and behind the camera. In many ways, he influenced my path in the entertainment industry and it’s an honor to partner with Martin and his younger self and share him with the next generation of fans.”

During its five-season run, the sitcom Martin, which Lawrence co-created with John Bowman and Topper Carew, received People’s Choice and NAACP Image awards. The show’s resurgence began in 2022 with a successful 30th-anniversary reunion special on BET+, featuring performances by Snoop Dogg and Bryan McKnight. The revival continued at the recent 75th Emmy Awards, where Martin was honored alongside other iconic TV series such as All in the Family, Cheers, The Sopranos, Ally McBeal, Grey’s Anatomy, and Game of Thrones, with a recreated set and a cast reunion.

Lawrence is currently starring in the film Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which has grossed over $361 million worldwide, pushing the long-standing movie franchise past the $1.2 billion mark globally. He is represented by IAG, Artists First, and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman.
