MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) — The Marquette County Sheriff’s second-in-command has died after a short illness, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The announcement of Undersheriff Daniel Willey’s death came Thursday afternoon as the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences and prayers to his family.

In a release, MCSO said Willey was an Ishpeming native who first served in the United States Air Force before beginning his 30-year tenure with the Ishpeming Police Department. While there, Willey would serve as a patrolman and detective sergeant before getting the top job as chief of police.

In 2017, Sheriff Gregory Zyburt appointed Willey as undersheriff—an office he held until his death.

“Undersheriff Willey’s dedication, kindness and sense of humor will be missed by not only the staff of the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, but the community as a whole,” said a spokesperson for the MCSO.
