Redbox Closes Its Kiosks & Website: End of an Era for DVD Rental Kiosks
Oakland Park, FL - In a move that marks the end of an era, Redbox, the popular DVD rental kiosk company, has announced it will be closing all of its locations. The decision comes as the company’s parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, moves to liquidate all of its assets.
Redbox has officially shut down its operations, leaving Floridians and movie lovers across the country feeling nostalgic and bereft. Redbox has also shut down its website, angering customers who have movies they have purchased on the system.
A Brief History of Redbox Founded in 2002 by McDonald’s Corporation, Redbox was initially conceived as a convenient way for customers to rent movies at an affordable price. To reach a broad customer base, the company installed movie rental kiosks in grocery stores. By 2016, Redbox had a 51.8% market share of the physical rental market.
In 2022, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acquired Redbox, which had $325 million in debt at the time. At its peak, Redbox operated more than 43,000 kiosks in the U.S. and Canada.
Challenges Faced by Redbox Redbox’s business had been in decline for more than a decade before Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment bought it in 2020. The rise of digital offerings and streaming platforms led to a collapse in DVD sales during the 2010s.
The company’s financial straits were in part due to its lenders' refusals to live up to their obligations, resulting in asserted defaults and contractual terminations across critical content and service providers.
The Final Nail in the Coffin The COVID-19 pandemic delivered the final blow to Redbox. With movie theaters shut down and people turning to streaming services for entertainment, Redbox's already dwindling customer base dwindled further. Despite efforts to revamp its business model, Redbox was unable to recover and announced its closure on June 30, 2024.
The company’s parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, converted its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case to a Chapter 7 liquidation proceeding. This move signifies that the company couldn’t devise a repayment plan for its outstanding debts and will soon turn to selling off assets to pay back creditors.
Impact on Florida The closure of Redbox will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Florida, particularly for those who rely on the service for affordable entertainment. With the closure of Redbox’s 24,000 kiosks, all employees are expected to be laid off.
As the digital revolution continues to reshape the entertainment landscape, Floridians, like the rest of the world, will have to adapt to the changing times. The closure of Redbox serves as a stark reminder of the relentless pace of technological change and the need for businesses to continually innovate to stay relevant.
In the wake of Redbox’s closure, Floridians are left to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of home entertainment. As the sun sets on the era of DVD rentals, the dawn of digital streaming continues to change the way we consume media. But the memories of browsing through a Redbox kiosk for the perfect movie night will remain fond for many.

That does suck for those without wifi. And Great, now got me reminiscing about pre cell phone days. Or back when I couldn't afford wifi, red box was a go to and there are still plenty of people who use it. Back when there was movie gallery, block buster and what have you. I remember I once pooped in a store front ash tray out side of a Winn Dixie for entertainment.
