MONTROSE, SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It may be summer, but in Susquehanna County, the community had the opportunity to learn something new.

28/22 News reporter Iyee Jagne takes us to Montrose High School to explain.

Drone sports are just one of the many ways students can get involved in STEM. Janice Gavern, an Air Force veteran, organized the presentation for Montrose community members to bring awareness to the opportunities drone sports can offer if added to the school curriculum.

“This is part of a two-year effort for me to find ways to bring more technical education into the schools up in here in Montrose,” said Gavern.

Renewed hope in 51-year-old cold case mystery

The educational term is “gamification:” using a game to catch the student’s attention and teach technical skills.

“Possibly accessible to the aerospace industry to skill trades to the military to advanced education is a whole range of studies that could use the skills that they are learning in this program,” explained Gavern.

“They can use this to get involved with the farms. A lot of farms are using drones to check on crops, real estate, the film industry, and the military so there’s a broad range of career paths that they can take,” stated Mark Preyer, who works in sales of Drone Sports.

What they hope hooks the kids in is the gaming aspect.

“This is a system, which by the way looks like a game and plays like a game and catches their attention,” added Gavern.

The students are also able to customize the drone in many ways.

“It’s their own right so they take they take ownership of it. They paint it or they can program the LED’s on it that’s super fun. They can get involved with actually creating logos for the team creating shirts, and then the co-ed and just understanding how to work together,” explained Preyer.

Anyone who was not able to make it, but is still interested in learning more about drone sports, you can find more information online.
