First Alert Day: Heavy rain, flooding risk for parts of central NC

The potential for flash flooding is high on this First Alert Day due to heavy downpours and rain throughout the day.

Temperatures will reach the upper 70s to low 80s.

Scattered showers and storms are a possibility on Saturday. ABC11 Meteorologist Kweilyn Murphy said the gradual drying will trend into Saturday evening and night as the inverted trough moves off to the east.

Overall, 1 to 3 inches of rain for most areas is expected with an isolated possibility of 4+.

Downpours and thunderstorms move through Durham Friday morning. A flash flood watch is in effect through midnight in central NC.

ABC11 Chief Meteorologist Don Schwenneker said contributing factors to the flooding potential could be the lack of overall moisture in the topsoil and the hardness of the ground, which has baked in the heat of the sun in recent weeks and will be less absorbent than usual.

Looking Ahead

The next heat wave begins Sunday as high pressure builds in from the west. The temperatures will reach the mid to upper 90s.

Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday could reach nearly 100 degrees. Rain and storm chances will be limited to 20%.
