Christina Hall , the star of HGTV 's Christina on the Coast , knows her way around a home improvement project. But as season 5's premiere shows, there are still some scenarios that are new to her: namely, renovating her own childhood home for her parents .

One of the many things Hall knew she would need to change out and update in her parents' house is actually a part of the kitchen that she tells Parade can be "the star of the show" in anyone's home.

We'll reveal that specific update below, and share more about what Hall wants everyone to know about the show's new season—premiering on Thursday, July 11 with new episodes dropping every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST.

A Surprising Part of a Kitchen That Can Be the "Star of the Show"

"When you find the right backsplash, you can work around that," Hall tells Parade .

That's why looking at backsplash was one of the very first things Hall did with her mom during the first episode of this new season.

"Ultimately, the backsplash we picked came out a lot more gray and my mom is not a fan of gray, so we had to end up going in a totally different direction, but it all worked out," she says, explaining that the kitchen floor had undertones of red and orange, so other colors that could be brought in would be "a little difficult."

"If you want to start with backsplash, say [it's] going to be the star of the show or you want to do a really interesting stove cove area, [then] I think it's important that you bring a sample with you when you're choosing counters," Hall continues. "Because a lot of times, you pick something and you kind of forget exactly—like, say it's white—what shade of white, whether it's off-white or there's some gold in it or some gray. So I always recommend taking a sample of that to choose the other materials."

Exciting Home Trends Popping Up in Season 5

"What's interesting about this season, and I'm happy about it, is that my homeowners are all doing a lot of different things," Hall tells Parade . "Before, I feel like the trend was, you know, to pick one style, whether it's modern or farmhouse or whatever the style was for the house. And now, I feel like people are blending styles more and not being so basic—really taking in different colors, different wood tones."

"Everyone's not wanting all white shaker anymore, so people are really stepping out and trying different things which is fun for me, because if I'm just cut and pasting the same design, then I can get a little bit bored," she adds.

Check out all of the new designs and styles every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST on HGTV!
