FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says two Arkansas residents have been infected with dengue fever as cases continue to rise across the country.

More than 9.7 million cases of the disease have been reported this year, more than twice as many reported in 2023, the CDC said.

The CDC says dengue fever is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can cause vomiting, nausea, headaches, bone and joint pain, and rashes.

Nine Salmonella cases in Arkansas linked to backyard poultry flocks, CDC says

It is most common in tropical environments. 218 cases have been confirmed in Florida, the most of any state in the country. New York has 143 reported and Massachusetts has 59 to round out the top three.

The CDC says the two reported cases are in Clark County and Mississippi County and were travel-associated.

No antiviral treatment to treat dengue is currently available but cases usually subside within one to two weeks.
