Cognitive decline and the hidden factors you may not know about

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Just like your body, your brain can deteriorate with time and age.

Cognitive decline is described as the gradual loss of thinking abilities. When you think of this diagnosis, your thoughts may drift to only age being a factor in this decline.

However, that is not always the case. Cognitive decline can also be impacted by the things that happen around a person.

Social Worker, Kim Ratcliff said she has seen first hand the issues the elderly face.

“They want to stay in their homes. That’s their whole deal is to be independent and stay on their own but they can’t afford those repairs,” said Ratcliff.

Mental stimulation, exercise and socialization are all key points to keeping a healthy mind.  Visiting agencies such as the Raleigh County Commission on Aging is also beneficial.

Ratcliff said for those who may have advanced diagnosis, including Dementia and Alzheimer’s, there are also options as well.

“The adult daycare here is a great facility. It gives caregivers a break and it also family members a break. There is great staff and support for people with that diagnosis,” said Ratcliff.

Staff at Raleigh County Commission on Aging wish to see more resources become available. Not only to enhance cognitive ability, but also help individuals live more independently.
