Woman Killed While Riding Bicycle on Dark Highway

CULPEPER, Va. – Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a fatal crash that killed a woman who was riding her bike at night.

According to an emailed media release from VSP Public Relations Manager Matthew Demlein, the incident occurred June 30 on James Madison Highway (Route 15).

At approximately 9:39 p.m., a 2007 Toyota Camry was heading northbound on James Madison Highway near Dirt Road, when the driver was unable to avoid striking a bicycle that was traveling in the center of the northbound lane. The bicycle did not have any lights or reflective gear.

The rider of the bicycle, Rachel Ann Jannelle Bachoon, 35, died at the scene.

The driver of the Camry, Christina M. Hamilton, 33, of Charlottesville, suffered minor injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
