Shelley Duvall , known for her work in several Robert Altman films and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining , died Thursday morning. She was 75. Duvall was born in Fort Worth, Texas, before her family settled in Houston when she was five years old. She was a graduate of Waltrip High School.

She died in her sleep due to complications with diabetes, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Duvall’s acting career began by a chance encounter with Altman at a party while he was on location for his 1970 film; Brewster McCloud . He asked Duvall to appear in the film, which she agreed to, leaving Texas for the first time to play the love interest of Bud Cort’s Brewster.

She’d go on to appear in other Altman films, such as McCabe & Mrs. Miller , Thieves Like Us, Nashville , Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson, 3 Women and Popeye .

She may be best remembered for role in the 1980 classic, The Shining , starring opposite of Jack Nicholson, as her character, Wendy Torrence, attempted to survive her husband turned unhinged axe-wielding maniac. Duvall has spoken on the record many times about how difficult shooting the movie with Kubrick was for her, leading to a lot of stress as principal photography took over a year to complete. She reportedly had to film the iconic baseball bat scene 127 times .

Duvall left acting for most of the 2000s, returning to Texas. She returned to acting in the 2023 film, The Forest Hills .

She won several wards, including “Best Actress” for 3 Women at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival and from the 1977 Los Angeles Film Critics Association. She also won the 1984 Peabody Award for Faerie Tale Theatre. She was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2020.
