Potatoes are an incredibly versatile and delicious vegetable. They can be sliced, diced, mashed or fried, covered, smothered, peppered and enjoyed as chips, hashbrowns, french fries, potato salad, soup and so much more. This versatility helps the starchy veggie pair well with almost any meal.

But in case you don't have enough ways to consume potatoes in your recipe book, let me introduce you to the potato tornado, also known as a potato spiral.

The spiraled and skewered potato is easier to make at home than you might think. For fun, you can also pair it with homemade corn dogs to make an enjoyable handheld dinner for diners of all ages.

All you need for this dish is potatoes, butter, and your favorite toppings. It’s all to taste, so use as much or as little as you like.

    To make a potato tornado:

    1. Skewer a large potato.
    2. Cut the potato in a spiral motion. You can do this by hand or use a potato spiralizer or spiral cutter.
    3. Gently spread the spiralized spud apart on the skewer.
    4. Submerge it in water.
    5. Repeat with other potatoes.
    6. While the potatoes are soaking, melt the butter.
    7. Remove the potatoes from the water and pat them dry.
    8. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper that's sprayed with cooking spray.
    9. Smother the potatoes with melted butter.
    10. Add your favorite seasonings.
    11. Bake for 30 minutes at 325ºF.
    12. Enjoy!

Medium-starch potatoes, like Yukon Gold, Yellow Finn or Yellow Rose potatoes are recommended for potato tornadoes.
