Criminal justice advocate and author, Dr. Letitia Scott Jackson appeared The Rashad Richey Morning Show to discuss her work in prison reform and her nonprofit organization, Keeping Families Connected .

During the interview, Dr. Jackson, who was wrongfully convicted in 2011, shared her personal story of overcoming legal and emotional challenges. After spending years fighting to clear her name and dealing with the tragic death of her son, she found a new purpose in supporting families affected by incarceration.

Dr. Jackson founded Keeping Families Connected to address the emotional and financial burdens faced by families with loved ones in prison. The nonprofit provides free luxury prison trips across Texas and, starting in August, Louisiana. These trips include transportation, meals, and emotional support, aimed at helping maintain family bonds during incarceration.

She detailed the process of these prison visits, highlighting a case of a woman in her 70s who has four sons in different prisons. Dr. Jackson’s organization facilitates these visits despite the logistical and financial challenges involved. She also emphasized the high costs associated with maintaining contact with incarcerated individuals, including expenses for phone calls, commissary items, and medical care.

Dr. Jackson stressed that her organization operates without government funding, relying on personal resources and donations. She also provides essential supplies and support for children of incarcerated parents through her nonprofit.

The discussion highlighted the broader issues related to incarceration and family separation, with Dr. Jackson urging listeners to understand the significant emotional and financial impact on those affected by the criminal justice system.
