President Joe Biden hit back at former President Donald Trump after Trump mocked a moment in which Biden referred to VP Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump.”
President Biden held an hour-long press conference Thursday evening amid pressure to drop out after his debate performance, in what was seen by many as a make-or-break moment.
Although his performance improved, things got off to a rough start when the president misspoke during a question about his VP, inadvertently referring to her as “Vice President Trump”:
REUTERS WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT JEFF MASON: My question for you is, how are you incorporating these developments into your decision to stay? And separately, what concerns do you have about Vice President Harris’s ability to beat Donald Trump if she were at the top of the ticket?
BIDEN: Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president don’t I think she was not qualified to be president. So let’s start there. Number one.
The fact is that the consideration is that I think I’m the most qualified person to run for president. I beat him once, and I will beat him again.
Minutes later, Trump posted a clip of the moment on Truth Social and wrote:
Crooked Joe begins his “Big Boy” Press Conference with, “I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.” Great job, Joe!
As the presser wrapped up, NBC News White House Correspondent Peter Alexander shouted a question about Trump’s dig, and Biden responded with a dig of his own:
PETER ALEXANDER: Sir, respectfully, earlier you misspoke in your opening answer and you referred to Vice President Harris as Vice President Trump. Right now, Donald Trump is using that to mock your age and your memory. How do you combat that criticism from tonight?
BIDEN: Listen to him! Thank you.
And minutes later, the president posted another rejoinder on X/Twitter, posting a screenshot of Trump’s jab and writing:
By the way: Yes, I know the difference.
One’s a prosecutor, and the other’s a felon.
