Devotees of the popular Starz series will recall the incident from the fourth season, shortly after Roger follows Jamie's daughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) back to the 18th Century.
"My first time working with Sam Heughan, I think, was actually the scene where Jamie smashes Roger's face in," the actor remembered in an interview with Starz. "And I remember we went too far with it. Apparently, it was too violent, so they had to dial it back a little bit."
Richard's comments accompany a clip of Jamie battering Roger until his nose bleeds, leaving fans to only imagine how the encounter originally unfolded.
He added: "That was my first experience on set with Sam. And it was Roger's first time meeting his father-in-law. I don't think that's quite how he thought that was going to go down."
Roger and Jamie might be gearing up for another heartfelt reunion, as Roger, the ex-history professor, has ventured through the stones once more in pursuit of his son Jemmy (Blake Johnston Miller), following the cliffhanger at the end of season seven's first segment.
Sophie Skelton, Richard's on-screen partner, shared her take on Brianna's turmoil over the shocking turn of events: "All of these things that could be going on, I think Brianna's mind's just at 100.
"And she doesn't know what she's left with. She's kind of had this huge family and now it's just her and Mandy. And that might be the rest of her life. It's heartbreaking, but we'll see what happens."
While fans are currently enduring another 'Droughtlander' break, they can look forward to uncovering the next instalment in the Fraser family's adventures before too long.
