Over the past few years, Donovan Ramsey has made himself an invaluable piece of the Cocke County roster.

Offense, defense — the Fighting Cocks have used him in both areas, with Ramsey even coming in as a possible starter at quarterback entering this season.

But Ramsey’s impact on both sides will be missed for at least a good portion of this season, as he went down with an Achilles injury in Cocke County’s 7-on-7 matchup at The King’s Academy.

“My understanding is he can be back sometime in October,” said CCHS head coach Scotty Dykes. “If that’s the case, hopefully we can get him back in the last part of the season for a playoff run.”

Until then, though, Cocke County will be without a dynamic player who offers multiple skill sets.

“We joke all the time about him being the guy that makes us right, because we can put him at quarterback, running back, receiver, and all the stuff on defense he plays,” said Dykes. “So it’s tough when you miss a guy like that.”

As mentioned, Ramsey was slated to be the probable starter for Cocke County under center.

“Coming into this part of the season, he would have probably been our number one guy,” said Dykes.

Now, the Fighting Cocks will look to Spencer Moore Jr., as well as a number of other options.

“Now with little Spence back, he’s rotated into that spot,” said Dykes. “And we will use Ethan Fine and Colton Sane and Talon Leas as an emergency quarterback.

“So we’ve got some options there, but with Donovan going down, that’s a huge piece of the puzzle that’s missing.”

That is true on defense as well, as Ramsey’s absence leaves a hole at defensive back.

“Easily one of our most physical defensive backs,” said Dykes. “Loved to hit and make tackles and was good in coverage too, so we’ll miss that.”

Despite being absent on the field, though, Ramsey has still been around the team as much as possible while rehabbing.

He walked around the Fighting Cocks’ 7-on-7 event at Powell with crutches on Thursday, but he stopped to offer advice to his teammates whenever possible.

“It’s been great,” said Dykes. “As soon as he could get back, he’s been here encouraging the guys. He’s been talking to the quarterbacks and receivers, getting them lined up, helping them through progressions.

“That’s been great to see, that he has matured to know what’s going on and be kind of an assistant coach that’s their age.”
