‘Three Women’ Trailer: DeWanda Wise Explores an Open Marriage in Lisa Taddeo’s Novel Adaptation

The transformative relationships of a trio of women is captured by a writer in the latest Starz novel series adaptation.

“Three Women,” based on Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling book of the same name, debuts on the network with a star-studded cast. Shailene Woodley plays writer Gia, who is grieving the death of her family and sets out to interview three “ordinary” women to tell her their stories of love, life, and loss. DeWanda Wise, Betty Gilpin, and Gabrielle Creevy play the interviewees.

The official “Three Women” synopsis reads: Three women are on a crash course to radically overturn their lives. Lina (Gilpin), a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life. Sloane (Wise), a glamorous entrepreneur in the Northeast, has a committed open marriage with Richard (Blair Underwood), until two sexy new strangers threaten their aspirational love story. And Maggie (Creevy), a student in North Dakota, weathers an intense storm after accusing her married English teacher (Jason Ralph) of an inappropriate relationship.

Laura Eason (“The Loudest Voice,” “House of Cards”) is the series showrunner, and “Three Women” author Taddeo (upcoming “Animal”) serves as creator and executive producer. Kathy Ciric and Emmy Rossum also serve as executive producers.

The show was originally greenlit by Showtime, which planned for a 2022 release. However, after Showtime merged with Paramount+ , the completed, unaired series was scrapped. Showtime also canceled two other series , “Let the Right One In” and “American Gigolo.” Starz later acquired “Three Women” after it was additionally shopped to HBO and Amazon.

The series marks actress Woodley’s return to TV reign. The “Big Little Lies” alum recently also starred in docuseries “Hope in the Water,” which reunited her with producer David E. Kelley.

“David E. Kelley reached out to me to be a part of ‘Hope in the Water’ as we had talked about our mutual affections for the ocean and specifically his fish farm while working on ‘Big Little Lies,’ ” Woodley told IndieWire . “I really responded to the narrative of hope, specifically that this series uses it as its North Star. It is so refreshing that in a time of so much chaos, fear, and unknowns, there is a show that is offering tangible solutions and ways for all of us to be more involved in creating a more symbiotic future.”
