Sunshine for the west, cooler to the east; Atlantic coastal storm splits forecast Friday
7 days ago
Friday a coastal system off the Virginia coastline brings southeast winds and mostly cloudy skies for our eastern state line friends. A mountain shower in the afternoon is possible but more the exception of the day than the rule.
Towards the west, it’ll be a mostly sunny day with highs pushing back into the mid and upper 80s. A touch more humidity over Thursday certainly brings back that July summer heat feel. Otherwise, we’re in great shape for the Friends of Charity Auto Fair!
Tonight, showers fade and we remain mild through the late evening as humidity levels continue to rise. A mostly clear night allows temps to cool back into the low 60s for the mountains, cities and urban centers stay in the mid 60s.
Saturday high pressure builds in to help nudge our pesky coastal low farther east. A bit more sunshine for our eastern mountain counties helps push afternoon temps into the 80s for many. Western counties will reach for the upper 80s as humidity level rise once again. A few puffy clouds form in the heat of the day but we look to stay dry as high pressure asserts its influence keeping us dry.
Sunday will be a copy and paste day from Saturday with highs pushing into the upper 80s for the mountains, low 90s for the western counties. Humidity values will make the day feel much hotter from 10am – 4pm. Heat index values will be elevated in the upper 90s for our western counties so some extra care is needed to stay safe. Hydrations and plenty of breaks if working outside. A muggy night with low in the upper 60s, low 70s.
Monday we step up the heat and humidity again with highs pushing the 90s with plenty of sunshine. A pop-up thunderstorm in the afternoon/early evening but again, not exactly a high probability of those showing up in any amount to help with the drought. Lows remain very mild in the upper 60s/low 70s.
Tuesday another 90 degree day ahead with heat induced thunderstorms in the afternoon. The typical summer pattern as a cold front inches closer to the region. After sunset, storms rain themselves out and fade leaving us muggy and mild in the upper 60s for lows as clouds remain stubborn.
Wednesday a cold front looks to bring beneficial rain with scattered downpours and showers throughout the day. A better chance of widespread rain for the afternoon as the front crosses. Like with any cold front after a long stretch of hot and humid weather, we’ll be watching for the chance of strong storms with damaging winds.
In your extended forecast, we’ll be watching for the same heat and humidity pattern we’ve come to know this summer. As less organized system push through, afternoon pop-up storms become the norm. We don’t look to enjoy any breaks from that anytime soon. These showers will help some with our on-going drought but it’ll be some time before we see much beneficial rains. Temps still running well above average keeping that summer heat around.
