SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A man is facing charges following a chase Thursday afternoon in Spartanburg County.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were patrolling Highway 292 crossing over I-26 at 5:02 p.m. when they noticed the driver of a vehicle sitting at a stop sign not wearing a seatbelt.

The deputy followed the vehicle for a couple of miles until he could get behind it.

While following the vehicle, the deputy noticed the vehicle turn right without signaling onto Chapman Road and began to accelerate but eventually had to make a U-turn on the dead-end street, the incident report said.

The deputy then attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle ran the stop sign and turned right onto Highway 292.

Once the pursuit began, deputies attempted a tire deflation on Rainbow Lake Road.

The sheriff’s office said the driver, Jeremy Gonzalez, of North Carolina, turned away from the device and headed straight for a deputy. Before he hit the deputy, he turned left and kept driving.

Eventually, Gonzalez got on to I-85SB at Gossett Road.

The sheriff’s office said spike strips were attempted a second time and Gonzalez avoided them again.

As the chase continued to mile marker 75, a Campobello police car hit Gonzalez’s vehicle causing it to crash off the right side of the interstate.

All of the deputies stopped to see if the vehicle was immobilized but that is when Gonzalez accelerated, drove head-on into the passenger side of a patrol vehicle then drove away.

At that point, the deputy was given commands to disable the vehicle. The deputy drove up to the driver’s side and attempted to crash the vehicle.

As he started to lose control, the Campobello unit came around and rammed the vehicle pinning it against the deputy’s vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Gonzalez was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder, malicious injury to personal property, hit and run, blue light violation, reckless driving, no proof of insurance, and possession of marijuana.

The passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

The sheriff’s office said the chase lasted 28.1 miles with top speeds of 100 mph.

He is currently being held in the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office without bond.
