After a sweltering week with little relief, Delaware is in for a rainy weekend before the next heat wave arrives.

What is the weather like in Delaware this weekend?

The National Weather Service on July 12 reported that the Mid-Atlantic is at a slight risk of excessive rainfall on Friday. A weak front with tropical moisture remains in parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic through Sunday. Thunderstorms are possible through Saturday morning.

The inclement weather will bring localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, small streams, roads and low-lying areas the most vulnerable.

After the rain, hazardous heat is expected to expand across the eastern United States late this weekend.

    Flood advisory

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for New Castle and Kent counties due to possible flooding caused by excessive rainfall. Both counties are under flood watch from 6 a.m. on Friday through Saturday afternoon.

The advisory for New Castle County predicts 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, but localized amounts near 3 to 4 inches are possible. In Kent County, 2 to 3 inches of rainfall are expected, but localized amounts near 4 inches are possible.

In both counties, excessive runoff may result in the flooding of rivers, streams, creeks and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Creeks and streams could rise out of their banks and low-water crossings may be flooded.
