AT&T customers in Wisconsin likely had their texts and calls exposed in a massive data breach

Records of nearly all of AT&T's cellular customers were exposed in a massive breach during mid 2022, the telecom company announced Friday.

AT&T, which services Wisconsin, said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission it learned in April that customer data was illegally downloaded from the company on a third-party cloud platform.

According to the telecom company, "the compromised data includes files containing AT&T records of calls and texts of nearly all of AT&T's cellular customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) using AT&T's wireless network, as well as AT&T landline customers who interacted with those cellular numbers between May 1, 2022, and Oct. 31, 2022.

"The data does not contain the content of calls or texts, personal information such as Social Security numbers, dates of birth, or other personally identifiable information. It also does not include some typical information you see in your usage details, such as the time stamp of calls or texts," according to the release.

The company said the data does not include customer names, but there are often ways to find the name associated with a specific telephone number.

AT&T reported that it does not believe that the data is publicly available as of Friday. The company said it is working with law enforcement to arrest those involved in the breach. At least one person has been apprehended in the investigation.

If you were a prior customer between May 2022 and November 2022, AT&T will send a notification with your account number and case number. You can use that data to submit your request.
