THE ADIRONDACKS (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced a warning for hikers in the Adirondack Park on Friday, July 12.

Due to recent heavy rains, the DEC issued a high-water advisory for the Adirondack Park. According to the DEC, regional bodies of water have risen considerably after the recent rains, and are urging hikers to postpone hikes near waterways and on high-elevation trails.

Severe flooding in Lowville brings significant damage to homes and roads

Current trail conditions across the Adirondack Park are extremely wet and can pose risks to hikers such as falling due to slippery rocks and unstable trail treads and hypothermia.

Hikers are advised to avoid high-elevation trails temporarily due to damage to trails. However, hikers are also encouraged to check the weather the day of, night of, and day after their trips in case of an unexpected overnight stay. The DEC also advises to turn back on your hike if you notice any signs of changing weather conditions.

For more information, you are encouraged to contact the Adirondack Backcountry Information website for updates on trail conditions, seasonal road closures and general information. For more information on hiking safety, you are encouraged to check out the HikeSmartNY webpage for what to do in case of an emergency.
