Support to cut immigration up ‘sharply’ to 55%: Poll

In the latest sign that President Joe Biden has a crisis on his hands over his border blundering, Americans have turned “sharply” to curbing immigration.

In a blunt assessment of the president’s policies, Gallup said Friday, “For the first time in nearly two decades, a majority of Americans want immigration levels to the U.S. reduced rather than kept at their present level or increased.”

The shift is jarring, said the polling outfit.

“Significantly more U.S. adults than a year ago, 55% versus 41%, would like to see immigration to the U.S. decreased. This is the first time since 2005 that a majority of Americans have wanted there to be less immigration, and today’s figure is the largest percentage holding that view since a 58% reading in 2001,” it added.

The issue splits partisans, but the survey found support for closing the border among Republicans, independents, and Democrats.

“Although the desire for decreased immigration varies widely by party, all three groups are significantly more likely than a year ago to favor less immigration. This includes a 15-point increase among Republicans (to 88%), an 11-point increase among independents (to 50%) and a 10-point increase among Democrats (to 28%),” Gallup said.

Biden has tried to deal with the crisis but only on the edges, and it is likely to hurt his reelection chances in states on the border and those being hit with massive influxes of illegal immigrants, including Illinois and New York.
