Several New Jersey counties were placed under flood watch by the National Weather Service Friday morning as heavy rainfall is forecasted to soak the region through Saturday afternoon.

The flood watch was issued for Morris, Sussex, and Warren counties at 6 a.m. Friday morning.

For Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, and Hudson counties the flood watch will take effect at noon. Both watches will stay in effect through Saturday afternoon.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," the NWS warns. "Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded."

Showers and thunderstorms, which may produce heavy downpours, are expected to move through the region from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service recommends that those in the affected areas continue to monitor later forecasts and be on alert for potential flood warnings. If you live in a flood-prone area, you should be prepared to take action in case of a flood.
