Not all experiments turn out right–especially in the music industry. Fans often like consistency and shun anything that strays too far out of an artist’s confines. Nevertheless, there are a fair few musical experiments that have panned out. In John Lennon’s case, an experiment became one of his favorite projects ever. Find out which song Lennon cited as one of his best, below.

She’s not a girl who misses much

Do do do do do do, oh yeah

She’s well-acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand

Like a lizard on a window pane

Many songwriters are lucky if they come up with one idea–let alone three at the same time. Lennon achieved the latter when he wrote “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” Lennon cites that smorgasbord of instrumentation as one of his favorite songwriting efforts to date.

    On his hobnail boots

Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy

    Working overtime

“I like that,” Lennon once said of “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” “One of me best, I forget about that. I think it’s a beautiful song. I just like all the different things happening in it. I put together three different songs. But it was meant to be like – I don’t know, it seemed to run through all the different kinds of rock music.”

Though that could’ve been a bit of a jumbled up mess in some songwriters’ cases, it worked like a charm for Lennon. Many fans also cite “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” as one of his best efforts–despite its experimental qualities.

    Revisit the song, below.
