2 dead in Newbury Park shooting

A man shot another man in a Newbury Park home Friday morning before turning the gun on himself, authorities said. Both have died.

The incident was reported at 6:38 a.m. in the 100 block of North Jerome Avenue, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Dean Worthy. Two people were said to have gunshot wounds.

A 31-year-old woman who lives in the home reported the shooting, Worthy said.

The apparent victim, a 30-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, Worthy said.

The other man, 33, was pronounced dead inside the house from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Worthy said.

The preliminary investigation confirmed the incident was an apparent murder-suicide, he said. Both men were said to be Thousand Oaks residents.

The woman was present during the incident and investigators were speaking with her, Worthy said.

Sheriff's officials later said in a news release all three parties knew each other. The male suspect reportedly entered the home and shot the other man, then shot himself. No other details were provided.

The names of the two men were not released pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities said the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the community. The sheriff's office is contracted to provide police services in Thousand Oaks, including Newbury Park.
