If you’re an active AT&T customer then you’re probably not going to be here for this news: the cellphone company has announced that hackers have gained unauthorized access to records of calls and texts of “nearly all” its cellular customers.

The breach occurred over a six-month period from May 1, 2022, to Oct. 31, 2022, and AT&T has taken immediate action to address the situation. While the telecom giant assures that the stolen data does not include personal information, such as Social Security numbers or dates of birth, of course it raises concerns about the privacy and security of customer information.

AT&T said in their statement released early Friday morning, explaining the stolen data just contains information that identifies the telephone numbers with which an AT&T or MVNO wireless number interacted during the affected periods. This includes telephone numbers of AT&T wireline customers as well as customers of other carriers. Importantly, the data does not include any call or text content.

    More On The Breach:

AT&T discovered the breach in April and immediately took action by working with law enforcement agencies. The company has confirmed it is “working with law enforcement in its efforts to arrest those involved in the incident,” the company said. “Based on information available to AT&T, it understands that at least one person has been apprehended. As of the date of this filing, AT&T does not believe that the data is publicly available.”

AT&T has pledged to inform all affected customers through various channels, including text, email, and U.S. mail. Customers are also encouraged to log into their accounts to check if their data has been impacted. The company has implemented additional cybersecurity measures to prevent further unauthorized access and has closed off the point of unlawful entry.

The company states that committed to ensuring the security and privacy of customer data and is working tirelessly to safeguard against future incidents.
