Reasonable Doubt left us on the edge of our seats, and now the Hulu series is back with a tantalizing storyline drenched in drama. In the last few minutes of the season finale, we learn that Shanelle (played by Shannon Kane) has possibly murdered her husband, Jamarian “JT” Tucker (played by Christopher Mychael Watson), and Jax (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) is left to pick up the pieces.

We caught up with the cast, who were on the scene during Essence Fest to promote the second season. We discussed Jax’s evolution, the marriage dynamic between her and Lewis, and the latest cast member to come along and shake things up.

‘Reasonable Doubt’ keeps the drama going in season 2

Because Jax is always up for a challenge, she takes on Shanelle’s case and enlists the help of defense attorney Corey Cash, played by the delectable Morris Chestnut. While navigating her friend’s case, she’s also tasked with piecing together her marriage to Lewis (played by McKinley Freeman), which suffered tremendously in Season 1. We watched the couple come to a crossroads in their relationship that had the potential of ending their union, especially after Jax’s affair with then-client Damon Cooke (played by Michael Ealy).

“Louis and Jackson’s dynamic is about trying to get an understanding of what Ground Zero is, right? What’s the path forward? One of the hardest things to do in those moments, especially as a father and a husband, is to do that while being honest about your own flaws. This season explores that in a way that’s really beautifully written,” Freeman said in an exclusive interview.

Jax seemed unsure of what she wanted in Season 1, but this time around she shows a different side of herself. “In Season 2, we get to see Jax really try to figure it out. We get to see her be vulnerable in a way that we haven’t seen her in Season 1. She’s trying to find herself again. She’s trying to figure out how it all works now that she’s in this new space after having experienced such a trauma, you know? In Season 2, we really get to see all of those inner workings when we all experience trauma in our lives,” Corinealdi tells me.

Morris Chestnut’s character, Corey Cash, adds a new layer of drama to Jax’s life. He is a confident, talented attorney who can undoubtedly help her win Shanelle’s case. Chestnut says he was a huge fan of the series, so joining the cast was a no-brainer.

“Being a huge fan of Season 1, I couldn’t stop binge-watching it. It wasn’t even a question of whether I wanted to be a part of Season 2. I jumped at the opportunity. It’s extremely well written. It’s extremely well-acted, and then the scripts and the storylines for Season 2, in my opinion, are even better. They’re deeper, they’re stronger. I’m honestly blessed to be a part of it,” Chestnut says.

The series takes viewers on endless twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. The first two episodes of Reasonable Doubt premieres on August 22 on Hulu.
