Excessive Heat Is Threatening These Major Cities Right Now
By D.J. Myers,
3 days agoIn case you haven’t noticed, it’s hot out there. Dangerous heat levels have been forecast for large swaths of the South, West, and Midwest, with about 32.9 million people, or about 10 percent of the population of the contiguous United States, expected to have heat levels that are downright dangerous. Some major cities are also expected to be sweltering.
Every year, hundreds of people die from extreme heat in the United States. In order to deal with this heat, the National Weather Service recommends staying hydrated, staying out of the sun, and seeking refuge in a cool room. It’s also recommended that you check in on relatives and neighbors – especially the elderly and those who live alone – to make sure that they’re doing okay.
When gauging how hot it is, it’s important to not just take the temperature into account, but the heat index. The heat index is a measure of both heat and humidity – which makes heat more oppressive by not allowing sweat to effectively evaporate from your body – in the shade. In the sun, a person could perceive the temperature as being up to 15 degrees F warmer. The National Weather Service categorizes a heat index of 80-90 degrees as “Caution,” 90-103 degrees as “Extreme Caution,” and 103-125 as “Danger.”
In the “danger” zone of 103-125 degree heat index, heat cramps or heat exhaustion is likely, with heat stroke possible after long exposure or exercise. Above 125 degrees, heat stroke is highly likely.
To determine the major cities being threatened by excessive heat, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on current weather warnings and advisories from the NOAA’s National Weather Service . Cities whose land area fall at least 50% within the boundaries of an NWS excessive heat warning as of July 11, 2024 were ordered by maximum observed temperature during the period July 1-8, 2024. Temperature data is from the NOAA’s nClimGrid-Daily program and was aggregated from the census tract level to the place level using boundary definitions from the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line shapefiles program. Only cities with at least 100,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey .
If you live in any of these cities, try to stay cool. You might also be living in a city where summer is getting hotter .
