Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend Christina Fulton , with whom he shares son Weston , has broken her silence about the incident involving the 33-year-old allegedly assaulting her.

In a statement obtained by People , the actress, who dated Cage from 1988 to 1991, detailed the events that led to Weston's arrest on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon on Wednesday, July 10.

Fulton explained how he "brutally assaulted" her back in April while in the midst of a mental health crisis, though, while a warrant was later issued, the younger actor didn't turn himself in until this week, after which he was released on a $150,000 bond, according to the publication .

Fulton explained that around 5:30 p.m. on April 28, Weston's friends sent "urgent messages" to her "regarding his deteriorating mental state" and "urging [her] to come help."

However, "he was already in the midst of a manic rage" when she arrived "to offer support and console him," which allegedly led to her being "brutally assaulted" from which she said "sustained serious injuries."

She still issued "desperate pleas to the responding police officers" for them to "detain him for a mental-health evaluation," but she claims that her request was "refused."

A spokesperson for the LAPD told the publication that the altercation between parent and child began as a verbal argument before it escalated, and ultimately "two victims [were punched] multiple times, causing injury."

In her statement, Fulton added, "As a mother, I am deeply saddened and concerned about Weston’s ongoing mental-health crisis. It is imperative that he receives the help he desperately needs."
