When it comes to wardrobe essentials, the desire to invest in great-quality, luxury pieces can be understandable. However, there are some clothing staples that experts say are not worth luxury prices.

With designer fashion pieces ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars, investing a lot of money into the wrong pieces can become a financial strain. Staying away from unnecessary luxury items may be best, especially since inflation has caused average luxury prices to increase by nearly 25% since 2019.

Fortunately, knowing which clothing items and accessories to skip the luxury versions of and opt for affordable alternatives can save your wallet — and your wardrobe.

    Seasonal Accessories

Accessories like scarves, hats and mittens are only worn a few months out of the year — probably even less if you live in warmer areas. If you opt for cheaper options of seasonal accessories, you can better afford to have a wide variety of styles and looks.

    Hair Accessories

Hair accessories like hair ties, scrunchies and barrettes can be easily misplaced due to their small size. Rather than going luxury, opt for affordable and trendy hair accessories.

“There isn’t a need to spend much on hair accessories,” said Stella Rousou, business development and partnerships director at Style DNA , who recommended shopping at retailers like Zara, Uniqlo and H&M. “By doing so, you’ll not only save money but also guarantee a polished appearance with lasting quality.”

    Basic T-Shirts

Clothing items like T-shirts typically get a lot of use and are often used more as a layering piece than anything else. Therefore, everyday pieces like this don’t have to be luxury since they may be worn out quicker than other items in your closet.

“I have had luxury tees and I have had tees that I have purchased from discount stores, and I honestly prefer the discount store versions better because they ‘break in’ after wearing and washing a few times,” said Jennifer Johnson, founder of True Fashionistas .

    Sundresses

Basic sundresses are intended for everyday wear, and thus the luxury option isn’t always necessary.

“Sundresses are meant to be wash and wear and you can get some very cute ones at discount stores,” Johnson said. “Typically, you can find more at the discount store than you can luxury. A good sundress is one that you don’t have to save for a special day to wear because you are too nervous to wear it because you spent so much on it.”

    Swim Cover-Ups

Rather than investing your money in a seasonal swimsuit cover-up that will only be worn for a short time, many trendy and cheaper options can be found at a wide range of retailers.

“Let’s face it — they will get shoved into your beach bag, then worn at the beach where it’s exposed to sun, sand and usually saltwater,” Johnson said. “Save your money for that great-fitting swimsuit.”

    When To Buy Luxury

The only items that should be big investments are timeless pieces that will serve their purpose for a long time. These are usually classic pieces that won’t go out of fashion once this season’s latest trends are no longer popular.

“Think that classic navy or black pencil skirt, that killer white button-down that fits you perfectly or that amazing sheath dress that you can pair with a nice blazer or cardigan [that makes] you feel like a million bucks,” Johnson said.

While purchasing high-quality luxury clothing pieces is bound to boost one’s self-esteem, these investments should only be made if these garments are substantially better quality than their cheaper counterparts, or if said clothing items will actually be of use and align with your lifestyle.

“Being honest with yourself is a way to go with this riddle,” said Joana Walker, writer and fashion expert at Margo Paige . “For example, if you spend your days relaxing at the pool and organizing cocktail parties from behind the laptop, go for the high-end sets that go well with such an undemanding lifestyle. But if you are about to buy a new handbag to carry around while traveling and want to spend $3,000 on it, consider that fear of losing it or having it stolen will be your permanent companion.”

Essentially, heavy consideration and moderation are important when it comes to both luxury and affordable wardrobe purchases.
