NEWLAND — On Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6-9 p.m., the Avery Humane Society will host a benefit event, Paws for Celebration, at beautiful Appalachian View near Linville. An amazing dinner will be provided by Stonewalls Restaurant of Banner Elk and music will be supplied by DJ Karl Mohr.

There will be a 50/50 raffle, a wine pull, a photo booth, and both live and silent auctions. Tickets are $150 per person and are limited. Registration ends on Friday, Aug. 9 at 3 p.m., so reserve your seat now.

Call the Avery Humane Society at (828) 733-9265 or go to www.averyhumane.org and follow the event page to reserve your tickets online. Sponsorships, if you would like to help even more, are available at various levels.

According to Elsa Delgado, Avery Humane Society’s executive director, “This evening is more than just a gathering of friends in a beautiful place. It is a chance to meet our amazing staff, to learn about the work we do to help save and protect stray and abandoned animals and get them placed with loving families. Every day generous neighbors, friends, and area businesses and organizations help us save lives and offer kindness and compassion to the animals in our care through their donations, sponsorships, and time spent volunteering. We think that’s a great reason to support Paws for Celebration.”

All net proceeds from the fundraiser will provide direct support for Avery Humane Society’s work to respond humanely to the needs of lost, abandoned, abused, and homeless animals in Avery County. The shelter also accepts animals transported from other shelters where they would have been euthanized because of lack of space. Avery Humane Society houses 500-600 animals at the shelter and adoption center every year and provides free or low-cost spay/neuter services to hundreds more to reduce the number of unwanted and vulnerable animals in the community. Please come visit and tour the incredible facility!

An original animal themed handmade quilt by Board member and fiber artist Nancy Schaffel will be one of the most popular items in the auction. There also will be beer flights and wine-tasting experiences, gift cards to local restaurants, fabulous vacations and other wonderful items. It promises be an enjoyable evening while helping to provide a better life for all the homeless “fur babies.” The Avery Humane Society has a 94% adoption rate that is one of the highest in the state. Animals stay at the shelter until they are placed with a forever family. 65% of the animals that come to the shelter are strays. The shelter relies primarily on private donations and foundation grants to fund their work. Currently, the shelter receives no county funding.

The mission of the Avery Humane Society is to respond humanely to the needs of animals in Avery County by providing the following: shelter, food, exercise, and love; spay and neuter services; medical and behavioral care; adoption promotion and networking; community education and outreach. Special programs include Rescue Readers, which pairs children and youth with shelter cats for reading sessions, and New Leash on Life, which is a long-term partnership with the Mountain View Correctional Institution.
