Anyone who has ever tried their hand at gardening or homesteading knows just how pricy everything can be, which is why @justabunchofchicks is sharing her foolproof hack to helping cut some of those upfront costs, including the purchasing of containers for a raised garden .

She says that if you go to your local farmer or nursery you can ask them for lick tubs, something she says they may sell to you at a significant discount, or maybe even gift you for free!

Of course, if you don't have any place like this local to you, you can always ask the same question at your local garden center. Many plants arrive to them in nursery pots, which they sometimes discard when moving them into fancy ceramics or plastics to make them more desirable to potential consumers.

If you're thinking that you can save a few bucks by skipping containers altogether and planting directly into the ground, consider this: some people need to use container gardens, especially those who are renting or who live in an area with rocky, poor, or contaminated soil.

Additionally, using a container can also make things so much easier for those with mobility issues, since your garden will be slightly raised.

Container Gardening Hack Helps With Planting

One of our favorite tricks for container gardens involves using this woman's trick . All she does is fills her pot so that there's just enough soil for the plant she's putting in there, and then while the plant is still sitting in the nursery pot, she sticks it into the flowerpot and fills the rest of the area with dirt, packing it down so that it's nice and firm.

Then she slips her plant back out, removes it from the nursery pot, and then puts it back into the space she just created for it.

Not only does this help her keep the right amount of dirt in the container, but it cuts out all the guess work!

Nursery Pots Are Cheap Container Garden Options

And speaking of that nursery pot! If you decide to do this with your plants, hang onto those nursery pots you're bringing home and reuse them within your garden.

We mean, you already spent the money on the plant, you may as well keep the post around and get some use out of them, too!
