BELPRE, Ohio ( WTRF ) — A West Virginia man’s decision to buy a lottery ticket with his son has now changed his life.

Melvin Stubbs III of West Virginia won the $140,001 Rolling Cash 5 prize for the Monday, July 8 draw, according to a press release from the Ohio Lottery.

“I’ve been sick, so I had cancer. I think it’s a blessing to win,” he said in the release.

Ohio Lottery said Stubbs was spending time with his son and decided to go purchase a ticket. When he checked his tickets that night and saw he had won $140,000, Stubbs said that he was overjoyed.

“I was pretty happy about it. I couldn’t sleep that night,” he said.

He will take home $100,800 after mandatory state and federal taxes totaling 28%. The Ohio Lottery did not specify where in West Virginia Stubbs is from, but it did say that the ticket was purchased from Peoples News & Book Mart #4 in Belpre, located at 412 Washington Blvd.
