Naps are amazing. Everyone loves a good nap, especially when it actually makes you feel better and doesn't just end with you waking up in the dark with a low-grade fever. Dogs are lucky: naps are always helpful for them, and they typically spend most of their day napping!

Eventually, though, they do wake up. Regular dogs waking up and giving us their biggest yawns is already great, but there's something so epic about a giant dog's big yawns. Their mouths are huge, their yawns are loud, and on Tuesday, July 9th, one Great Dane's big yawn almost broke the internet:

Kaz and Appa must have a lot of fun together. They also must take a lot of good naps!

Appa is about 4 years old, and he's 185 pounds, which seems like a lot for a single mom to handle! Because of his adorable black and white pattern (and the fact that he's basically the size of a grown man), his mom refers to him as a "house cow." He's also an only dog and a total diva.

One of his favorite things to do is sleep , and it's a huge part of his content. He sleeps anywhere he can: he loves the couch, mom's bed, and he'll sometimes settle for the floor if it's hot. Once, the two of them went on a trip and ended up getting separate double beds in their hotel room!

Why Do Large Dog Breeds Sleep so Much?

If you've spent a couple minutes researching dog breeds, you've probably learned that large breeds are often regarded as "lazy." They're often guard dogs, hailed as intimidating for their size and the depth of their bark. Make no mistake, they will absolutely chase down a bad guy if they need to, but they also love a good nap.

Larger breeds tend to sleep more because of their excessive weight. For example, it takes more effort for a 185-pound Great Dane to run than it does for a 6-pound Chihuahua. Exercising expends more energy in large breeds, and it also contributes more to joint/bone aches that can make them appear tired, too.

Owning a large breed definitely has its perks, and no one would trade their large breed for the world, but it also had some no-so-good parts . Large dogs are more susceptible to cancer, hip/joint issues, and their lifespans are shorter than those of smaller breeds. Great Danes, for example, only live about 8-10 years. Luckily, Appa still has a lot of years ahead of him, and mom is ready to make them as good as they can be!
